Re:
Harley noise,
Yes I'm sick of them! I'd like to know what decibel level they
reach on acceleration. It has to exceed a jake-braking semi. How
on earth have they gotten away with it? Like you said, a faulty
muffler will get you a fix-it ticket while Harleys flaunt their
noisiness!

"Are
you STILL Sick and Tired of
loud piped bikes?"
|
|
"Loud
vehicles not good !!!!!! I blew out the baffle in my pipes
so I was loud for about 3 days on my motor cycle. I say
not only motorcycles, but all vehicles. "
"Yes!
I'm really annoyed by loud Harleys. I am a motorcyclist,
and a respectful, quiet one."
"I
think Harleys have great style and the noise to some is
music to my ears."
"The
drivers are JERKS who do not have respect for the peace
of others. I am sick of it!"
"I
understand about being woken up while asleep, but loud pipes
are needed to save lives 24 hours a day."
"'Loud
pipes save lives'' is the slogan of the motorcyclists who
insist that raucous exhaust pipes on their bikes are more
likely to head off a possible accident."
"The
problem is not the loud pipes, but riders who abuse them
-- revving the engine loudly and often."
"I
don’t get this one… what is it about being loud?

More
noise it NOT an indication of more power... so what is it they're
trying to prove? Do they consider it a form of freedom of speech?
Do they assume people in hearing distance appreciate the fine
sound of a fine Harley? If they took off their required
helmets, would they like the noise as much? When indulging in
a rare morning to sleep in, do Harley owners love being woken
up by a Harley driving by? When entertaining friends at their
home, do they love not being able to be heard because of clubs
of Harleys driving by?
Airliners
are required to use reduced power when taking off over residential
neighborhoods. Jake braking is illegal in certain areas. Sears
Point Raceway outside San Francisco has sound restrictions because
nearby cows failed to produce as much milk!
Saying
a loud Harley is a safer Harley is a crock! It is the Harley-rider's
job to drive safely... not the terrified pedestrian or other car's
job to move out of the way on hearing a Harley's approaching roar.
In addition... a Harley's sound is MUCH louder after it's passed
- not ahead of it - which is the only place accidents might
be prevented.
I
agree with most Harley owners that the helmet laws are
government run amuck. Where in the Constitution does it say Congress
may make laws to protect us from ourselves? For me, seatbelt laws
fit that category as well... but that's another subject....
Do
you know if there are any municipalities in the US outlawing them?
I realize not all Harleys are loud.... but enough are to warrant
the attention of lawmakers. A PROPOSED legislative requirement
for measuring decibel levels before registration of any Harley
ALONE would get every Harley owner to make sure NO Harley exceeded
sound limits. The kicker would be simple decibel limits for ANY
vehicle.... and such ear-splitters would become extinct. It's
incredible Harley owners have gotten away with their childishness
for as long as they have! All I can think of is that Harleys cost
so darn much that the only people who can afford to own them have
enough money to have behind the scenes clout in government....
A lobby of legislator's buddies...
So...
what can we do? Did you get any useful responses as to action
on the issue? I'd be happy to commit some time to the issue. Thanks
for putting a voice to something that's irritated me for a time
now!
