Is Eminem the new Elvis?
Well, the answer is not as clear as I found out by asking around the office and looking at the world of popular America, 2002. This is really more the type of thing Cece Kegg-Smith should be writing about, but I feel the American people should have the opportunity to voice their opinions about the phenomena that is Eminem as well as those around the headquarters. Here is my statement and you have the chance to opine upon my words.
Eminem has become without a doubt America's most popular persona in a very short time. He has gathered a great following of fans and admirers for many different reasons. Regardless of how you feel about him, his music and overall image, he has become the poster boy for cool, a rebel without a cause for the new millennium. He is not James Dean, he is not Ricky Martin, he is more like the new Elvis. I know many of you are going to say; Is Midori on crack? Well, let's see the facts. Many of you will not remember that when Elvis began his career, he was not the American Icon he is today. In fact he was a threat to morality and decensy, just like Eminem is today. From early on in his career, Elvis was censored and even banned for certain behaviours giving him the nickname, "Pelvis Elvis" (girations). Many religious groups had also condemned such rude acts. Similarily speaking, gay groups bash the White Rap King. Speaking of white, Eminem is truly the first white rapper to elevate himself to superstardom. In other words, just like Elvis did years ago, Eminem has taken a black artform to the white masses. Want more resons: Both of them have gone through tough times and their share of controversy. Both of them began as musicians, turned into actors. Both of them are icons on their field. It's hard to tell whether, Eminem will really reach Elvis status, but so far, he looks to be on his way. So, what do you think?
